Physical absorption processes

The physical absorption process is based on physical dissolution phenomena of acid gas into absorbing solution selectively.

These processes usually use an organic solvent which absorbs H2S and CO2 simultaneously as a function of the partial pressure. In general, the higher the partial pressure and the lower the absorption temperature, the better the performance of absorption.  The process flow scheme is based on an absorber followed by 2-3 flash vessels. The processes are mostly used for H2S removal and/or bulk CO2 removal and are characterized by high acid gas loading, low circulation rate and low utility cost.

In general there are the following disadvantages.

  • Co-absorption of hydrocarbons (heavy hydrocarbons andaromatics are alost completely absorbed).

  • Solvent is expensive.
